The Young Voices Choir from The Queen’s Lower School in Chester will be appearing on TV on Sunday (April 27) in the semi-finals of the BBC Songs of Praise School Choir of the Year competition.

Six semi-finalists – Queen’s Lower School from Chester, St Martin’s Ampleforth from Yorkshire, Llangennech Junior School from Camarthenshire, Lindley Junior School from Huddersfield, Ysgol Iolo Morganwg from Cowbridge and Blackheath Prep School from London - go through to the televised rounds.

They go head to head to impress a celebrity judging panel including Gareth Malone, singer Laura Mvula and renowned choral guru Suzi Digby.

The competition is now in its 12th year on the BBC. The semi-finals and final will be shown on consecutive Sundays this spring on BBC One.

Queen’s Lower School music teacher and choirmaster Margaret Corlett said: “Music is such an important part of school life at Queen’s and I could not be prouder of the girls for the effort they have put in to get to this stage.”

Year 6 pupil Freya Ainsworth said: “I’m really excited to represent our school in something so big.”

Year Six pupil Mia Taylor added: “It is so great to know that we got through with competition from schools across the whole country – and it means we’ll be on television!”
