THE three Dutch and one British members of the Navarra String Quartet certainly gave their Chester Music Society audience their money's worth in their recital at St Mary's Centre on February 8.

The two major works in the Navarra's programme - Brahms' opus 51 and Beethoven's opus 132 - make major demands on the performers through both their length and intensity.

That the quartet gave committed and musically adept performances of both says much for their ability and staying power.

Particularly noticeable throughout was the strong and steady cello of Nathaniel Boyd, a name to watch out for.

The evening began with the ever popular Haydn's quartet opus 20 number 3 which gave the players the chance to show that they could play just as well in rather lighter mode.
