THE public are being urged to take extra care and observe a few precautions following more fires in and around Delamere Forest.

In recent weeks there have been several major incidents, including one on Thursday morning when firefighters spent two-and-a-half hours fighting a large grass fire in a remote area of the forest.

A spokesman for Northwich Fire Brigade said: 'Fires of this nature bear a disastrous effect upon our beautiful countryside and, more importantly, our nature reserves.

'We urge the public to be very cautious and careful when venturing out on activity days in this area. People need to take more care and be more vigilant.'

Anyone who spots a fire should immediately dial 999 and give details of the location using a map reference or landmark to help the fire crews find it more easily.

Grass fires and forest fires spread rapidly - do not be tempted to investigate. Leave the area as quickly as possible, ring for the fire service and do not return until the fire service tells you it is safe.

Care should be taken to extinguish cigarettes and other smoking materials. Never throw cigarette ends out of car windows - they can ruin whole fields of crops. And do not leave bottles or glass in woodlands because sunlight shining through glass can start fires. Never build a bonfire or use barbecues in these areas.

* Anyone who suspects a fire has been deliberately started should call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 after first alerting the fire brigade.
