A PUB landlady who lost two brothers in crashes with drink- drivers is urging Christmas revellers to think before turning the ignition key.

Pat Cardus, of the Crown Hotel in Tarporley, takes keys off drinkers who threaten to drive after one too many.

She has run the pub with her husband Carl for four years and chairs the town’s Pubwatch scheme.

In March her step-brother Neil Jex, 37, his fiancée Paula Gilbert, 29, and sons Tristan, three, and Kaiden, seven months, all died when their car was hit by a delivery driver still over the limit from partying the night before.

Paula’s nine-year-old son Macauley survived and is now being cared for by his grandparents.

Pat’s other brother David Elton, of Birkenhead, was in a drink-drive crash when she was 18.

David – an RAF serviceman who introduced her to Carl – was paralysed when a drunken driver on the wrong side of the road hit his motor- bike. Five years later he died of a blood clot that lay dormant since the crash.

Pat said: “Our regulars don’t drink and drive because they know how strongly we feel about it.

“We take keys off people, I’ve had arguments with people before now.

“There is no sure measure of how much you can drink and still be safe to drive so it is better just to leave the car at home if you are unsure.”
