A FAST stretch of Chester's ring road will be the subject of a county investigation.

Cheshire County Council's accident investigation team will survey the A41 between Chester Zoo and Sainsbury's to see if anything can be done to make the road safer.

News of the investigation came as a driver escaped an overturned car without injury after crashing at an accident black spot.

The blue hatchback over-turned at the junction of Mannings Lane and the A41 at 4.30pm on Wednesday. The driver was freed from the wreckage by firefighters and taken to the Countess of Chester hospital for treatment.

Jane Caldicott dialled 999 after hearing the accident from her house on Mannings Lane and says it is just one of dozens she has seen since moving to the area 18 years ago.

She added: 'Before I moved here, someone was thrown from a car into my hedge and died. I used to count the number of accidents that happened here but there are so many that I can't keep count.

'I lost lots of blankets because I used to take them out for casualties.'

She added the accidents seemed to be caused by a combination of traffic speed and volume and road design.

'When people come out of Mannings Lane on to the A41, they don't realise how fast cars are going when they come from Upton down towards Hoole Road and sometimes there are people crossing Kingsway directly across the road into the lane,' she said.

'The amount of money and time they have spent on putting an island in the middle of the road at the junction is ridiculous - it just seems to flip the cars over when they hit it. It was a complete and utter waste of money.

'It is a busy lane - all the traffic for the football field comes through it and there is a lot of traffic for the Hammond School.'

'Just for this crash, with one car, they have got several paramedic vehicles, police cars and two fire engines. How much does it cost every time there is a crash here?'
