YOUNGSTERS from Oldfield Primary School in Vicars Cross have proved to be real swashbucklers by winning the Cheshire Annual Fencing Tournament 2013.

After finishing a successful fencing tournament among high schools in the spring, Chester Fencing Club coach Valerijs Scipanovs organised a series of fencing competitions among primary schools with Guilden Sutton, Oldfield, Overleigh St Mary’s, Tarvin, King’s Junior and Ellesmere Port’s St Mary of Angels Catholic Primary participating.

The standard of fencing was very high, which was reflected in the result.

Three teams – Oldfield, King’s and St Mary of the Angels Primary School – finished the tournament with two wins and one loss each and the experienced Guilden Sutton team were just one point short to be in the same category.

As a result the top three places had to be decided by the number of points fencers of each team scored in their individual matches.

The final ranking of the tournament was as follows: 1 Oldfield Primary School; 2 King’s Junior School; 3 St Mary of the Angels Catholic Primary School, Ellesmere Port.

Coach Valerijs Scipanovs would like to thank Bishops’ Blue Coat C of E High School and the Catholic High School in Ellesmere Port for their continuous support for the tournament as well as all the fencers for taking part in the competitions and their parents for the enthusiasm and support they have given their children.
