IN response to the Government's plans to axe hundreds of post offices, Council Tax-payers in Crewe and Nantwich are being urged to support their post offices by paying their bills there.

Following earlier concerns from many people, Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council introduced a scheme last year where bills could be paid through the Post Office, free of charge to the customer.

This is not only makes things more convenient but also increases the number of people using post offices and may strengthen their case for remaining open.

Council leader Brian Silvester said: 'Post offices are an important part of everyday life for many of our residents. They are often a focal point for the community and can be a lifeline for elderly residents in particular. The council believes that it is its duty to support these vital facilities.'
