SOME 250,000 plastic bottles were prevented going to landfill in the first week of a new recycling scheme.

Delighted council chiefs are hailing Vale Royal's scheme as a huge success.

Lead councillor for waste management Malcolm Gaskill said: 'We collected a staggering 14 tonnes of plastic bottles in the first eight days of the scheme, preventing more than 280,000 plastic bottles being needlessly dumped in landfill sites.

'Thank you to everyone taking part and helping us get off to such a successful start.'

The scheme is only for the collection of plastic bottles; all other plastic materials should be placed in the normal waste bin.

The scheme is only available across 80% of the borough at present. Those not involved can take bottles to banks at Cumberland car park on Leicester Street, North-wich, Northwich Household Waste Site and Morrisons, Winsford.
