HALTON car owners are being targeted in what police are calling 'car and key burglaries'.

Police have mounted an operation to crack down on offenders in Halton and Warrington following an increase in thieves burgling houses, stealing car keys then driving off in the car.

A man has been arrested and charged and a 'pool car' used by offenders recovered. Police say forensic evidence obtained as a result will lead to further arrests.

Over recent years, car manufacturers have improved vehicle security. It is increasingly difficult to steal cars by traditional methods such as forced entry and hot wiring.

Detective Inspector Peter Shaw said: 'We have seen a steady increase in this type of offence over the past few years.

'The stolen vehicle is often then used to commit other crimes such as ram-raid burglary of commercial premises or robbery.

'We are advising householders to ensure that the security of their homes is a priority. Additionally, we advise that vehicle keys are not left visible inside premises. They should be hidden away or, if possible, locked away.'

Anyone who has information about this type of crime should call the police on 01244 613833 or Crimestoppers in complete confidence on 0800 555 111.
