CHESHIRE police have issued an appeal for witnesses following the death of a woman who was hit by a taxi in Chester at the weekend.

The 24-year-old, from Leeds, was walking along City Road on Saturday evening (February 25) when she was struck by a black taxi at about 9.32pm.

Police are particularly keen to speak to a person who was driving a silver private hire taxi, similar to a Mondeo or a Vectra hatchback who drove past the scene and may have witnessed the collision taking place.

PC Gareth James said: "We also want to speak the driver of a red BMW Mini soft top which was also seen on CCTV driving past at the time."

"Two white vans were seen to drive past before the collision occurred, the woman may have walked across in front of them to get to the other side of the road.

“The name on the side of the two vans was possibly Antac,” he added.

"If this was you, please contact us in order to help us piece together events leading up to the collision and afterwards."

Anyone with information should contact PC Gareth James on 101 quoting incident number 1118 of 25 February 2012.

A 48 year old man from Chester was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of a collision and is currently on police bail.
