Nineteen teams from 18 primary schools across the Chester & District area competed in the primary schools seven-a-side world cup at Christleton High School at the end of the summer term.

Organised and run by Dave Johnson from Upton Heath CE Primary School and Calum McIntyre from Christleton High, this was the second edition of the tournament, after the inaugural event last year.

The teams played in four groups representing countries from around the footballing world. After the 36 games were played, the top two from each group progressed to the quarter finals. Chester Blue Coat, Waverton, St Theresa’s and JH Godwin were knocked out at this stage, the latter being defeated on penalties. This left Guilden Sutton, Farndon, Upton Heath and Saighton to contest the two semi-finals. Both games were close with Farndon progressing to the final 1-0 and Upton Heath 2-0. Saighton then beat Guilden Sutton 1-0 to claim the bronze medals.

In a very closely fought final, both teams played extremely well, but it was Upton Heath who found the edge and scored the only goal of the game with a great finish from striker Sam Collins.

A goal-saving tackle, from Tom Mason, in the last minute stopped the tie going to Golden Goal.
