Cycling enthusiasts turned out in full force to wave the world's top riders through their communities yesterday (September 8) as the the Friends of Life Tour of Britain snaked its way through Cheshire West.

Hundreds of spectators lined the streets as the second stage of the UK's biggest professional cycle race whizzed through Manley, Kingsley, Ashton Hayes, Frodsham, Farndon, Saighton and Waverton en route from Knowsley to Llandudno.

Kiwi Mark Renshaw claimed victory of the Knowsley to Llandudno stage, which spanned a distance of 200.8km, with a time of 4.38:54.

Olympic gold medallist and national treasure Sir Bradley Wiggins sprinted into 11th place for Team Sky, while Team OPQ rider Mark Cavendish finished 34th in spite of a leg injury he sustained by crashing into a team car during the opening stage.

The eight-stage race began in Liverpool on Sunday (September 7) and will conclude in London next Sunday (September 14).

More than 100 riders will tackle the 119m route from Newtown to The Tumble in Abergavenny today.
