With their own title race well and truly over, a host of Manchester United stars headed to back the runners and riders on a rather different playing field over at Chester Races .

Reds stars including Danny Welbeck, Ashley Young and Ben Amos put on their most dapper suits to head to the opening day of the Boodles May Festival at the Roodee racecourse in Chester.

The players were among the thousands heading to the annual racing extravaganza under mixed weather fortunes of sunshine and showers on Wednesday.

And as the Reds’ disappointing Premier League campaign this year is effectively at an end, the players didn’t need to worry about risking the wrath of interim boss Ryan Giggs by heading out ahead of their final match of the season at the weekend.

The mixed weather at Chester didn’t dampen the spirits of revellers - including the throngs of female racegoers donning their best outfits for a day at the races.

Bold neon brights were a key feature of opening day, which may give a hint of what’s to come at today’s more flamboyant Ladies Day (Thursday, May 8).

For fashionable fillies will be upping the style stakes to be crowned the Boodles Best Dressed Lady at the event.

This year’s festival also got off to a showbiz start - with new ITV breakfast show Good Morning Britain filming there with presenter Andi Peters doing a live link-up to the show’s London Studios at the start of the day.

Chester Races regular, and racehorse owner, Michael Owen was also among famous faces heading to the opening day.
