A DOUBLE Olympic gold medallist is swapping his boat for a bike when he comes to Northwich shortly.

James Cracknell will join dozens of other classic bike enthusiasts when he competes in the Thundersprint, the annual biking spectacular in Northwich town centre in May.

'The Thundersprint is well used to welcoming superstars from the biking world but it's the first time we have ever had an Olympic athlete compete with us,' said organiser Frank Melling. 'James is better known for his prowess as a rower, but he is also a huge bike fan and is looking forward to the Thundersprint.'

James told the Chronicle he wasn't allowed a motorcycle when he lived at home, but has always had a passion for bikes.

He said: 'Since I passed my test in 1990, I have never been without two wheels - although I had to be very careful when I was in intensive training for the Olympics.

'After winning my second gold medal, my treat to myself was a Yamaha R1 - the definitive hyper sports bike. Now I have a Yamaha XTZ trail bike which is fast and nimble - ideal for threading my way through the traffic.

'I can't imagine what the Thundersprint will be like. I already know Northwich quite well because I visited the town when I took part in a promotional film for rowing - the idea that you could fill this relaxed little market town with bike racing fans just leaves me bewildered.'

He will be riding the Vivaldi British Superbike - very carefully - on the day of the Thundersprint, Sunday, May 8. nFor more details, visit www.thundersprint.com
