The lanes were closed while emergency services cleared the scene

A Cheshire Police spokesman said an oil tanker stopped behind the car to prevent another crash and to alert oncoming motorists about the accident.

Cheshire Police arrived at the scene shortly after the accident and were diverting traffic around the tanker, which blocked two of the three lanes.

The lanes have now been cleared but traffic remains heavy in the area between junction nine and 10.

Highways England says there are delays of up to 20 minutes against expected traffic.
