THE Spice Girls may have chapioned the notion of ‘girl power’ in the 1990s but a 13-year-old from Handbridge was wielding her very own version back in the 1970s.

Christine (Chris) Dunn (née Curd) had two brothers who attended Chester Boys Club on Overleigh Road.

She said: “They are two and four years older than me and I asked them why I couldn't go. They said it was just for boys.

“So I hammered on the door and demanded to be let in. The youth leader, John Needham, said he would take my request to the trustees and it was agreed that girls could be allowed in the following week.

“That was true girl power in 1977!”

Chris went on to become a youth worker and she is now organising a reunion at the club, which remained Chester Boys Club for a number of years but is now known as Chester Youth Club.

The reunion is on Sunday, December 4 at the club at 3pm.

John Needham, canoeing instructor Ian McMullen and volunteer leader known as ‘H’ will all be there to walk down memory lane.

Video clips from the past will be shown, including footage from 21 years of sending young people to the Outer Hebrides.

Chris added: “And if we are lucky the band Mistaken Identity will play for us!” – an apparent in-joke for club members.

Entrance is £1 and there will be a raffle and a tuck shop. All members and former members are welcome.
