Police are pleased to inform motorists a busy Northwich road has reopened following an earlier incident in which an HGV got stuck in a collapsed manhole.

Winnington Lane was closed at the crossroads with Moss Road/Bond Street following the incident, which happened about 11.10am today (Thursday, May 5).

But Cheshire Police spokesman Daniel Hind confirmed Winnington Lane has now reopened.

He understood the vehicle had taken a wide swing to negotiate roadworks but a manhole cover collapsed as the front wheel went over it causing the truck to get stuck.

Arrangements were made to recover the HGV but it was understood repairs would have to take place to the hole in the road before traffic flows could get back to normal.

Winnington Lane had been closed in both directions between Winnington Avenue and Castle Street with a diversion put in place along Winnington Avenue. Moss Road had also been closed from Cromwell Road.
