Sporting pupils of Ellesmere Port Catholic High School have taken part in a football tournament in which they have enjoyed much success in the past.

The school competed in the contest organised by North West recruitment and training firm New Directions Education, who joined forces with League One football club Tranmere Rovers.

With sports activities in schools becoming increasingly important, the tournament provides a unique opportunity for schoolchildren play against local teams to showcase their footballing talents.

Ellesmere Port Catholic High won the competition three years ago and has reached the final of the competition for two consecutive years.

The girls have been coached by Genevieve Trowler, head of PE at the school, with assistant coach Jodi Ventre.

Ms Trowler said: “The team is really excited to be taking part in the tournament."

“I feel this is an amazing opportunity for the girls to take part in a competitive football tournament."

“I hope this inspires them to get more involved in playing football.”

Mike Childs, account manager at New Directions Education, added: “It’s exciting to be involved in an event that gets the local community involved, I have enjoyed meeting the teams that are taking part in the tournament and wish them all the best.

“The teams are looking forward to being involved in the tournament and I am keen to see how the competition evolves.

“I will be attending the matches to support the teams and cheer everybody on.”

Lisa Harper, branch manager at New Directions Liverpool, said: “it has been a pleasure to work with Tranmere Rovers again this year. The schools involved have been very positive about the competition, Tranmere Rovers have organised the tournament very well.
