WOMEN are in tune for a new choir in Chester.

The Songsmiths is made up of parents, staff and friends of St Werburgh’s and St Columba’s RC Primary School in Lightfoot Street, Hoole.

Choirmaster Rick Smith said: “I was approached to set up the choir by women who just want to get together and sing. My wife and I set up Dawn’s Chorus at Upton Heath a while ago and already that is so successful that we have had to restrict the number of new members.

“Both choirs were inspired by Matt Baker’s A Handbag of Harmonies but that choir’s waiting list has been closed for a long time.”

Mr Baker, said: “Chester already has a wealth of very good choirs and music societies and hosts an international festival at the Cathedral.

“With the interest shown by choirs in our twin cities, there is definitely scope for an international choir festival.”

He added: “I know that Chester Performs, which is responsible for the development of the performing arts in Chester, is interested in the possibility of such a festival.

“Our city has a wealth of spaces and it would be a fantastic opportunity for choirs to perform outside their usual venue.”
