Two new appointments at the University of Chester are expected to enhance its reputation as a centre of theology and religious studies still further.

Professor Robert Warner, of Tarporley, Cheshire, has been appointed as Head of Theology and Religious Studies, replacing Professor Ruth Ackroyd who retired last year. Prof Warner was previously Head of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Wales, Lampeter.

He said: “The University of Chester has a very strong undergraduate programme and a burgeoning postgraduate programme at masters and doctorate levels.

“I shall be looking to develop opportunities for our students further and raise our profile at national and international level. The University of Chester is widely recognised as a leading centre for the study of religion in the contemporary world. We have a strong research culture and our team’s expertise is supported by highly regarded print and online resources.

“We shall be seeking to develop new partnerships with theological colleges and other centres of higher education in theology and religious studies.”

The appointment of Professor Elaine Graham as Grosvenor Research Professor of Practical Theology will also contribute to these initiatives. Prof Graham was previously Samuel Ferguson Professor of Social and Pastoral Theology at the University of Manchester and has an international reputation for her published work.

Prof Warner commented: “Prof Graham’s appointment in Chester has already led to an increase in the number of practical theology doctoral students at the University. Indeed, we have now become the UK’s leading provider of professorial doctorate study in this field.”

In addition to practical theology, Prof Graham will be developing other new programmes of study for the University.

She said: “In the modern world it is important to understand the interaction between religion and wider society. I welcome the opportunity to develop a new master’s degree in faiths and public policy and look forward to launching it later this year.”
