Concerns have been raised about increased traffic on a busy A road in Neston.

Neston ward councillor Andy Williams (Lab) raised the issue with Karen Shore, (Lab, Whitby) who is cabinet member for environment.

Cllr Williams said: “There have been concerns expressed about the increase in traffic on the A540 in Neston due to the new high school and Aldi depot expansion.

“Could I ask Cllr Shore if it would be possible to instigate a traffic study with a view to improve road safety in the area.”

Cllr Shore replied: “The planning applications for the school and the Aldi distribution centre were supported with transport assessments.

“They both showed that whilst there would be some increases in traffic associated with the developments, the level of increase would not constitute significant additional impacts on the operation of the A540 and the nearby junctions.

“Consequently, in approving the applications, no additional off-site highway related measures or financial contributions were considered necessary.”

She continued: “An initial study will be undertaken to examine the traffic and collision data in the area to establish if further investigation is warranted.”

Cllr Williams inquired: “Could emphasis of the study be aimed at the Hinderton Road/A540 junction with turning right into Hinderton Road being a concern?”

Cllr Shore assured him: “Whilst the initial study will examine the traffic and collision data in the area, specific emphasis will be placed on the Hinderton Road/A540 junction and the right turn into Hinderton Road.”

Neston Town Council has heard arguments that with a general increase in traffic all the junctions on the A540 in Neston have increased safety risks.
