Neston High School’s Year 7 spelling bee came to an exciting conclusion as Ella Hennell-Nealey claimed first place in the grand final.

Year 7 students across the school started their spelling bee journeys the previous week in class time.

Each class held a spelling bee with their teachers to select their class champions who would go on to represent their class and teacher.

All class champions were then invited to Friday’s final for a chance to grasp victory for their class.

Each class champion group valiantly competed in a number of rounds which included science anagrams, subject key words, individual spellers and knockout rounds.

From here the leading teams entered the group final and after some very stiff competition 7r3 emerged victorious as group champions.

Mairead O’Hagan-Edwards, teacher of 7r3, said: “I am really proud of their superb achievement and excited to teach them this year.”

All that was left to decide was who would take home first place, second place and third place trophies.

Each speller from the champion group was invited to the front of the stage for a head to head final round.

After an increasingly difficult final round and thunderous bursts of applause, Ella Hennell-Nealey was crowned spelling bee champion in first place, followed by Ellie Roddick in second place and Kendal Ashmore in third place.

The final three were presented with their trophies and certificates by Charlotte Pearson on the stage and Ella was interviewed by school magazine, The Wave.

Organiser of the event and school librarian Miss Pearson said: “This event highlights the incredible spelling talent our Year 7 students can demonstrate.

“This event celebrates years of dedication to learning and practising spelling and we are delighted to reward students for such admiral qualities. The videos and tips shared today will also serve to support students to continue improving their spelling in time for next year’s final.”
