Tourists and locals will be able to try a free, citywide 'mystery quest' in Chester through January.

The challenge, which combines fictional elements with real-life events from Chester’s past, encourages visitors to explore the city centre’s history and solve a collection of cryptic riddles.

Deva Codex: Cat Quest launches on Friday, January 8 and is the third and final Da Vinci Code-style challenge from Chester Unlocked, the history and heritage project created by CH1ChesterBID and Big Heritage.

Visitors are challenged to use the city’s streets, buildings and history to help unlock a 2,000-year-old mystery, with prizes of up to £300 on offer for those who successfully navigate the clues using a specially created adventure map.

'Tackling those January blues head-on'

Marketing manager at CH1ChesterBID Julie Charlton said: “We’re tackling the traditional January blues head-on by launching the final Deva Codex challenge early in the month to give people something free and fun to do in the city centre.

“The first two Deva Codex challenges really caught the public’s imagination and we gave away thousands of free maps and field books to city visitors based locally, across the UK and even internationally.

“People don’t need to have completed any of the previous quests to take part in this one and it will be the third and final Deva Codex challenge, bringing the curtain down on what has already been a phenomenally successful project for Chester.”

How to get involved

Suitable for all ages, Deva Codex: Cat Quest takes around two hours to complete and people can take part any time between 9am and 5pm (Mondays to Saturdays) and 11am and 4pm (Sundays).

The challenge runs from January 8-31 and the free activity bags can be picked up in city centre locations including the Grosvenor Museum and Visitor Information Centre.
