Police and highways authorities have spent most of the day dealing with a three vehicle road traffic accident on the M6 in Cheshire.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area of the M6 at Woolston near Warrington.

One lane of the motorway in each direction was closed at junction 21 southbound and northbound while police and ambulance services dealt with the accident which involved a heavy goods vehicle crossing from the opposite carriageway.

Police reported congestion to junction 20 the Lymm Interchange and recommended that drivers found an alternative route while they dealt with the incident.

Highways England had hoped the motorway would return to normal some time between 1.30 and 1.45pm today (Sunday, June 26). But it was well into this evening before all lanes reopened.
