A CAMPAIGNER raising awareness of hospital superbug MRSA is to go all the way to Number 10.

Mavis Law, of Beckenham Grove in Winsford, is going to Downing Street on November 28 when she will present a petition to Prime Minister Tony Blair demanding the Government takes action to eradicate the infection.

Mavis, whose 32-year-old son Colin died of MRSA in 2003, will be joined by fellow members of pressure group MRSA Action UK, of which she is the Cheshire representative.

The campaigners are hoping the petition, which has been signed by hundreds of people, will force ministers into action.

Mavis said: 'All we are asking is that the issue of MRSA be discussed in the House of Commons.

'So far MPs have refused to do this, but hopefully we can convince them to take the problem seriously.

'I'm not scared about going to Downing Street - I thought I might feel overwhelmed but I'm just determined to get our point across.

'MRSA is a huge issue, and things like cleanliness in hospitals and awareness among nurses and hospital staff need to be looked at.

'The Government needs to take action to stop this tide of infection that is quickly becoming an epidemic.'

Tory Eddisbury MP Stephen O'Brien will join the group on the day. He said: 'Mavis has my complete support in what she is doing and the issues she is campaigning on. I will be delighted to meet up with them on the day.'

Members of MRSA Action UK will then take part in a Health Select Committee meeting, where they will grill health chiefs over problems surrounding the issue of MRSA.

Mavis added: 'The group members are from all over the country and are all victims of MRSA, either as sufferers or people who have lost someone dear to them.

'I feel that we were brought together - perhaps by an act of providence - to make a difference to people's lives.'
