A DISUSED petrol station has been branded ‘an eyesore’ – and residents and their MP are demanded it be demolished as soon as possible.

The old Quicks garage at the former Morrisons and Co-Op site off High Street in Saltney is still redundant, despite Morrisons snapping up the land for the second time earlier this year.

In July a 10-year-old boy suffered serious head injuries after falling 20ft from the roof.

And Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami believes it is now time for the shell to be flattened.

He said: “This part of Saltney really needs urgent attention as it detracts from efforts made elsewhere to improve the town.

“Enough time has elapsed since the supermarket closed and I believe enforcement action should be taken.

“Many residents have expressed concerns over the visual and health impact of the redundant petrol station. It should be removed as soon as possible.”

Resident Lynn Jones said gangs of youths congregate at the site, drinking and starting fires, leaving their mess behind.

She added: “If you look around people are trying hard to improve the area, but I think having the garage there really discourages people from coming to Saltney.”

Morrisons has been given planning permission to develop the 40,000sq m site – along with the adjoining former GT Owens cash and carry site – for a new superstore.

Plans include a superstore, petrol station and car wash, and the creation of a 434-space car park, trolley storage shelters, and enclosed service yard with lorry access. A company spokesperson said demolition work is under way.
