Construction work on the county's biggest Waitrose supermarket is set to cause headaches for Boughton residents who are facing months of delays from roadworks.

Builders began work last Monday on the £40m scheme which will not only feature the 50,000sq ft supermarket, but also an underground car park, hotel and office blocks at the former Boughton Retail Park, in a project set to continue until October.

The new supermarket promises to bring 400 new jobs to Chester, but the work on constructing it leaves hundreds of city commuters facing traffic delays every day in the meantime.

A Cheshire West and Chester Council spokesperson told The Chronicle:  "There have been roadworks in Boughton since work began on Monday with the building of the new Waitrose development.

"This work is set to carry on until October.

"The work is being done to create a new traffic signal junction which in turn will create a right turn lane for traffic coming into Chester, so cars are able turn right into Waitrose.

"To facilitate this, the road on the Waitrose side will have to be widened - into the Waitrose site – which will require a lane closure.

"It is unfortunate that this work coincides with the closure of the Station View footbridge in Hoole, as this will have a knock on effect, but it is all in order to facilitate this building work," the spokesperson added.
