A ‘miracle boy’ from Frodsham who survived a liver transplant aged just two continues to upset the odds.

Little Luca Biagetti, nine, needed life-saving surgery in 2009 after contracting a mystery virus and becoming seriously ill on the day his younger brother was born.

He was left in a coma and eventually saved by a donation from super-urgent transplant list, but Luca was still only given a one in 10 chance of pulling through the operation.

Now his range of sporting talent would make even heptathlete Jessica Ennis-Hill jealous.

Luca will compete at the British Transplant Games in Liverpool this weekend, looking to add to his already impressive medal tally of more than 20 over the last six years.

Such is his inspirational enthusiasm, he has also been selected as an ambassador for the competition.

Luca’s dad Nick Biagetti said: “We are really proud of what he has achieved and the confidence the games has given him.

“He is our miracle boy who enjoys life to the full.

“Meeting other children that have been through something similar has been extremely important for him and he can’t wait to catch up with his friends this year.

“He is very much looking forward to competing at the Games this year as this is Luca’s ‘home’ games being close to Frodsham.”

The British Transplant Games will welcome over 2,500 people to Liverpool between July 28-31.

This includes 800 athletes who have received life changing organ, tissue and stem cell donations to compete across a wide range of sports.

Luca has a pentathlon of his own and will compete in the 50m sprint, obstacle course, 25m breaststroke swimming, long jump and mini marathon for the age group 9-11 years.

He will represent the Birmingham Children’s Hospital Transplant Team, which is where the operation took place.

The nine-year-old was named as an ambassador by sponsors Westfield Health.

His friend Maisie Danher, 10, from Prenton, who needed multiple liver transplants in 2010, was also selected.

Nick said: “Lots of his friends and family will be turning up to cheer him on and to see Luca compete.

“Luca is very proud and honoured to be a Westfield Health ambassador.

“He is looking forward to joining his good friend Maisie on supporting Westfield Health’s sponsorship of the British Transplant Games.”

The ambassadors will assist in a variety of ways at the event, as well as showcasing the benefits of organ donation and encouraging people to sign up to the NHS Organ Donor Register.

Westfield Chairman Graham Moore commented: “When I first met Maisie and Luca I was overwhelmed at how positive and outgoing they are.

“They are such brilliant examples of how life changing organ donation and transplantation can be and it has been inspirational to hear their life stories and see all the things they are achieving.

“We wish Maisie and Luca all the very best in their events at the Games and are very much looking forward to spending time with them in Liverpool.”
