A signed shirt worn by former England striker Michael Owen in the victory over Argentina at the 2002 World Cup is being auctioned off for charity.

The game is more famously remembered for David Beckham’s redemption as he scored the all-important penalty, four years after being sent off against the same side.

But it was the Chester-born former Liverpool striker who was fouled by Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino for the spot-kick.

England won the match 1-0.

Now a TV pundit, Owen’s jersey is being auctioned in aid of the A-Star Foundation on website CharityStars.

The framed shirt comes with a plaque and photos of the forward during the match at the Sapporo Dome in Japan on June 7.

England made it out of the group thanks to the win over Argentina, but went on to suffer heartbreak in the quarter finals of the World Cup at the hands of Brazil.

Owen went on to make a total of 89 appearances for the England Football Team, racking up 40 goals.

He has also become a successful racehorse owner, with horses homed at the Manor House Stables in Malpas.

The A-Star Foundation aims to encourage young people to express themselves in a positive manner and make it possible for them to be around role models who do not glamorise crime, guns or drugs.

There is now less than a week for memorabilia hunters to bid as the auction closes at 7.30pm on January 27.
