THOUSANDS of commuters have been stranded on stationary trains along the Merseyrail network after a contractor accidentally severed a signal cable.
About 40 trains have been affected by the major failure on the network, which runs from Chester railway station across the Wirral and into Liverpool.
The failure, which happened in a north Liverpool network control centre at about 8.50am, also included passengers stuck on board trains under the River Mersey.
These trapped trains are being returned to stations on either side of the river, while a Merseyrail spokesperson said the network was due to start returning services to normal from about 10.45am.
