THE Mercian Regiment is to receive its freedom to march through a Cheshire West borough in July.

Four hundred troops from the regiment, the 1st Battalion of which is formed from the 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment, will parade through Ellesmere Port town centre on July 15 to mark the grant of the honour.

The mayor of Ellesmere Port and Neston, Cllr Keith Butcher, will take the salute in the civic square.

The council agreed to grant the regiment the freedom of the borough in July last year.

The Cheshires were granted the same honour in 1986 to recognise the long connections between the regiment and the borough council.

The last time such a ceremony took place in Ellesmere Port was in June 1986 when the freedom was formally granted to the Cheshires, according to a report.

The Cheshires merged with the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters and the Staffordshire regiments.
