A PROCESSION of medieval minstrels will receive their performance licences at St John’s Church, Chester at an event recreating traditions from more than 600 years ago.

A packed programme for the day includes ‘arming of the knight’ demonstrations, live music, storytelling, children’s games and Morris dancing.

A range of medieval characters will also be on hand to share their stories.

Richard York will perform medieval music and share his diverse instruments with visitors and The Time Bandits, a Chester-based band whose repertoire includes European Renaissance dance music, contemporary Anglo-French compositions and traditional folk songs, will also entertain the crowds.

Councillor Richard Lowe, local member for the City ward, said: “From the 13th Century to 1756, all entertainers, including musicians, jugglers and actors required a legal licence to be able to perform.

“To obtain their licences they had to attend St John’s Church every midsummer and we are now working with the church to recreate this highly colourful, exciting and entertaining tradition.

“Visitors will not only get the chance to follow the procession and see the Rev David Chesters award each of the minstrels their licences but will be able to get a real feel for the atmosphere, people, traditions and instruments from hundreds of years ago.

“It promises to be a great day for families and young people alike.”

The event, will take place on Saturday, June 26 from 11am-4.30pm, at St John’s Church in Vicar's Lane.
