Traffic was stopped on Chester ’s Grosvenor bridge because a young man was threatening to jump off in the early hours.

Drivers reported seeing the man standing atop the structure in Grosvenor Road looking as though he was contemplating jumping over the side at about 4.20am on Saturday (December 10).

Fortunately, police were quickly on scene to deal with the situation.

The bridge was closed to traffic with drivers asked to take an alternative route while officers talked to the vulnerable individual who was prevented from harming himself.

Cheshire Police spokeswoman Emma James said: “Officers were called on Saturday, December 10, at 4.19am following reports of concern for the welfare of a man on the Grosvenor Bridge in Chester. Officers attended and a 24-year-old man from Chester was taken to hospital for medical treatment.”

North West Ambulance Service confirmed crews attended the scene after being alerted at 4.42am following reports of ‘a male threatening to jump off the bridge’. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service was also alerted but the services of the brigade 'were not required'.
