A man visiting Chester for a day out at the races ended up in hospital with head injuries.

Emergency services including police had to be called to The Long Room at Chester Racecourse at about 6.45pm on Saturday (May 30) following reports a man had been assaulted.

On arrival, officers arrested four people on suspicion of section 20 assault. Michael Phillip Thornton, 40, of Wycliffe Road, Little Sutton, has since been charged with wounding/inflicting grevous bodily harm without intent.

He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear West Cheshire Magistrates Court today (June 1).

The victim, a 33-year-old man from Poynton, was taken to the Countess of Chester Hospital with head injuries, where he currently remains.
