A man has been killed after a crash on the A55 near Chester.

An 80-year-old woman was airlifted to Aintree Hospital after the multi-vehicle collision Westbound near Balderton at 11.35am on Friday (September 4).

A beige Citroen Picasso, a white Ford Transit van and a white DAF HGV lorry were involved in the accident.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cheshire Police arrested the 46-year-old driver of the HGV on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

To allow the air ambulance to land, the road was closed in both directions between junction 36A at Broughton and junction 38, the Posthouse Roundabout.

Traffic had to be diverted onto the A483 towards Saltney and then through the town on the A5104.

North West Motorway Police confirmed the A55 Eastbound had reopened at 1.58pm and Westbound at about 4.20pm.

Inspector Liz Cunningham from Cheshire Police said: “We are looking to appeal to anyone who was in the local area at the time of the incident and believes that they may be able to help with our investigation."
