A man has been arrested in connection with an incident in Ellesmere Port today (Tuesday, September 20) which resulted in a road being closed off to the public.

Police closed Highfield Road North in Ellesmere Port while talks took place with a man 'making threats'.

A specialist officer negotiated with the man, after Cheshire Constabulary said they were notified of an 'unfolding' incident at an address on the street at around 10.30am today.

A statement just issued by Cheshire Constabulary says: "The incident in Highfield Road, Ellesmere Port has now come to a conclusion, and a man has been arrested in connection to the incident.

"The road will be reopened shortly."

Superintendent Kevin Bennet said: “I would like to thank local residents for their patience and co-operation throughout this incident. Thank you for the support you have given.”

Earlier today, when the incident was ongoing, the force insisted there was no need for members of the public to be concerned.

A spokeswoman told the Chronicle: "Officers arrived to find a man refusing to co-operate and making threats.

"There is a large police presence currently at the scene and Highfield Road has been cordoned off as a precaution.

"There is no need for the public to be alarmed."

Despite this assurance, there was considerable speculation on social media that hostages were involved and a knife had been seen.

This prompted Det Insp Chris Williams, of Ellesmere Port Police, to dismiss such rumours, saying: 'All I can say is it is not a hostage situation. We are working very hard to bring things to a safe conclusion."

Plain clothes police officers were seen outside one of the houses talking through an open window.

The incident drew a crowd of locals speculating as to the cause of the large police presence in their community.
