A driver was arrested after crashing his car into a police station.

Bemused officers detained the driver after hearing a ‘crunch’ and seeing the car pivoted against the wall of Frodsham Police Station.

The driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle, ploughed through a fence and collided with the wall, in the early hours of this morning (Friday, January 2).

PC Greg Thompson, who said the damage was mostly to the fence outside the Ship Street station, described how his colleague PC Adam Norton, who was on duty, heard the incident and went outside to check after the collision at 12.20am.

“He heard this crunch,” said PC Thompson, who said the building was not damaged in the incident.

“There’s no major damage, no structural damage, he has just pushed the fence out of the post.”

A picture of the crash was posted on twitter by Cheshire Police with the hashtag #epicfail, sparking comments from followers including ‘you couldn't make that up’ and ‘Doh’.

Cheshire Police said a 49-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving and remains in custody.

A spokesperson for the force said: "At 12.20am on Friday 2 January 2015, a vehicle rolled down an incline and collided with the side of Frodsham Police Station.

"There was some damage to the car but the occupants of the car were not injured.

"The building does not appear to have been damaged."
