All lanes on the M56 have reopened after a four-vehicle crash had blocked two lanes.
A car hit the central reservation westbound near junction 12 at Runcorn at 3.32pm on Wednesday (December 9).
Cheshire Police said three other vehicles were involved.
Both the middle and outside lanes became blocked with heavy congestion building up, but this has now started to ease.
The Highways Agency said they expect traffic to be back to normal by 4.45pm.
North West Ambulance Service also attended, but nobody was reported trapped.
A campaign has been launched to improve safety on the M56 because of the high number of accidents, but there will be no smart technology on the stretch between junctions 12 and 14 before 2020.
