A motorist has been flown to hospital with life-changing, but not life threatening injuries after a crash on the M56.

Two vehicles were involved in the accident near J14 westbound at Helsby at 5.01pm.

Cheshire Police are currently dealing with the incident.

North West Air Ambulance initially landed in a field close and the motorway was briefly closed in both directions while the helicoptor repositioned.

One of the vehicles was reported to have left the carriageway during the crash.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service were also at the scene.

Motorists reported heavy tailbacks and stationary queues in both directions.

All but one lane westbound reopened just after 6pm.
