Commuters on the M56 have spent a frustrating morning around Junction 12.

Delays of more than an hour due to the slip road closure Eastbound at Runcorn have caused major problems.

The slip road is closed to allow construction workers to develop the new link between Halton and the M56.

But it meant the usual rush hour on the motorway has multiplied much to the frustration of those heading towards Manchester and the M6 junction.

Jeremy Johansson set off early but saw early signs of confusion.

He wrote on the Chronicle's Facebook page: "Went past at 6 this morning and it was clear but there were still drivers indicating and slowing down to 30 towards the exit as if to say 'is it really closed?"

Highways England had the matrix signs displaying the closure notice from 11 miles before the junction.

Mike Hopwood said: "An entirely predictable outcome. More misery for M56 users."

The closure is going to be in place for five weeks, and as of 10.30am - when traffic would expect to be easing - there were still major delays Eastbound. These eventually cleared at 11am, around an hour and a half later than usual.

Kevin Dandy reported there were also issues at the Daresbury junction.

He said: "Need some traffic management on the lights at the Preston brook round about. Cone off the left lane let the traffic go in lane two and three."

Peter Sykes also echoed this view on Twitter.
