All lanes have reopened on the M56 after a crash which caused long delays for drivers, but there has been another accident further down the motorway.

A lorry and a black Renault Clio were involved in the initial incident which caused the car to spin out of control near junction 14 at Hapsford.

Long queues formed after two lanes of the eastbound carriageway were blocked at about 4pm on Tuesday (March 29).

The motorway was fully reopened at 5.23pm with the tailbacks which stretched back in both directions and also onto the M53 now expected to steadily clear.

The second crash involved two vehicles near to junction 14, again eastbound where traffic was already slow.

One of the two lanes became blocked at about 5.50pm.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said the air ambulance attended the J14 accident, but was called off as the two elderly women in the Renault 'did not appear to be seriously injured'.

Traffic and travel site Inrix said there was queuing westbound due to people slowing down to look.

Traffic had also spilled over onto the A56 through Frodsham and Helsby due to motorists trying to avoid the queues.
