Motorists face delays on the M56 following a crash involving a HGV and a car.

One lane was blocked on the eastbound carriageway of the M56, on the notorious stretch between junction 12 in Runcorn and junction 14 at Hapsford.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said they received a call at around 2.30pm today (Friday, September 16) but there did not appear to be any serious injuries following the crash.

By just after 4pm, all lanes had reopened. There were still delays, but traffic was clearing steadily.

Meanwhile, the M6 in Cheshire is also congested. One lane is blocked and there is queueing traffic southbound between J19 A556 (Knutsford) and J18 A54 (Middlewich / Holmes Chapel), due to a broken down vehicle.

Traffic was already heavy in the area due to people slowing to look at an earlier accident on the northbound side, according to traffic website Inrix.
