Commuter traffic has been hit by an accident on the south-bound carriageway of the M53 motorway this morning (Monday).

A car collided with the central reservation between Ellesmere Port and Cheshire Oaks - junctions nine and 10 - about 7am leaving the woman driver trapped inside.

Fire crews pulled the car off the barrier using a winch allowing paramedics to open the driver's door to extricate the casualty.

She was taken away in a wheelchair and conveyed to hospital by ambulance but is believed to have suffered minor injuries only.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service say the motorway is only two lanes at that point and was blocked for about 15 minutes by emergency vehicles leading to traffic chaos.

A more minor collision is also believed to have happened at Hoole roundabout adding to the congestion.
