A driver and passenger escaped serious injury after the articulated lorry in which they were travelling overturned on a slip road of the M56.

Emergency crews were called to the scene shortly after 10.15am on Saturday, December 27, following reports of an HGV on its side on the westbound exit slip road at junction 12, near Runcorn.

Two men were trapped inside the cab of the white Volvo goods vehicle and after consulting with paramedics, fire crews helped them to safety using a short extension ladder.

They were then handed over into the care of North West Ambulance Service and were both transported to Warrington General Hospital.  The two men sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision and have since been discharged.

The slip road was closed due to specialist equipment being brought in to move the lorry, and motorists were urged to avoid the area.   It reopened yesterday afternoon (Sunday, December 28) following resurfacing work which had be carried out due to a diesel spill.

Drivers heading for Runcorn were asked to leave the M56 at junction 11.
