THE creative team behind the 2013 Chester Mystery Plays have unveiled their plans for the production, to be performed in the nave of Chester Cathedral for the first time next year.

Director Peter Leslie Wild, writer Stephanie Dale and composer Matt Baker were welcomed by the Lord Mayor of Chester, Cllr Eleanor Johnson, at the official launch of the 2013 cycle in the cathedral refectory on Thursday, March 8.

Peter described his appointment as director as ‘the fulfilment of a dream.’ He said: “The plays are one of the most exciting pieces of theatre in the English language, as relevant to Chester today as they were 500 years ago. This production will be the most exciting and memorable event in Chester in 2013.”

Stephanie, who is writing a new script for the production, said: “I am working with three timescales in mind – the time of the Bible, medieval Chester and Chester now.

“The anti-Christ may well spend the day at Chester Races and Herod could end up as a banker with an iPad!”

The 2013 plays will be a hat trick for composer Matt Baker, who created the music for both the 2003 and 2008 productions, which were performed on Cathedral Green. He said: “Performing the plays indoors will open up all sorts of opportunities for using live music.”

Also present at the launch were designer Judith Croft, production manager, Peter Herbert and sound designer Peter Nash.

Chairman of Chester Mystery Plays Jo Sykes said: “I was delighted to see so many people at the launch and signing up to be involved in the plays. It will be a phenomenal experience.”
