AN HISTORIC Catholic church in Widnes has been included in a book showcasing the most beautiful churches in the country.

The book, 'A Glimpse of Heaven', reveals the 'lost paradise' of Roman Catholic (RC) architecture in the North West.

The North West's stunning RC churches provide more than 25% of the 100-plus places of worship featured in the book.

It argues that Catholic architecture in England and Wales has been undervalued and overlooked.

St Michael's Church in St Michael's Road, Ditton, dates back to 1876-9 and is known throughout the area for its association with the now demolished Nazareth House.

The author, Christopher Martin, says St Michael's is just one of a 'series of little-known local churches whose often unspectacular exteriors belie architectural and decorative treasures within'.

Henry Owen-John, planning and development regional director for English Heritage North West, said: 'This book illustrates is that Catholic buildings have a quite separate history and development of their own.'
