FIFTY years ago, 10 women met in a home in Upton. Half a century later and what is now the Chester Ladies Luncheon Club will celebrate friendship and fine dining at an event at the Queen Hotel in Station Road.

Member Margaret Croston recalls how it all began.

“Lady Judith Granger was appointed the first chairman and the club met at the Blossoms Hotel, where the cost of the meal was 12s 6d. The entrance fee was two guineas and the annual subscription one guinea.

“The club stayed at the Blossoms for five years but moved to the Queen Hotel so that membership could be increased.”

The club was founded on January 25 1962 and luncheon has only been cancelled once in 50 years - in December 1967 because of the foot and mouth epidemic.

The guest speaker at the 50th anniversary event next week will be John Benjamin of the BBC’s Antiques Road Show. Past speakers have included weatherman Michael Fish, Antiques Roadshow expert Lars Tharp and Princess Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell.
