Drivers on the A55 near Chester hit delays of more than half an hour, but the traffic has now cleared.
Heavy congestion had built up in both directions from between junction 38 the Posthouse Roundabout and junction 39 on Tuesday (January 12).
Westbound a lane was been temporarily closed to allow a vehicle on the central reservation to be removed, with the tailback reaching as far as Hoole where the road becomes the M53 .
The Highways Agency website initially said traffic would return to normal by 5pm, which became 5.15pm and then 5.45pm as more vehicles joined the queue.
After the lane was reopened vehicles steadily began to move freely again.
