A GOLFING fun day has helped put the smiles on to the faces of local youngsters with disabilities.

Golfers and residents swung their way to charity success at Helsby Golf Club’s annual fun day which raised more than £1,000 towards their Powered Wheelchair Appeal.

Despite the bad weather, hundreds of people turned out to try their hand at the game and watch as the club presented their 287th and 288th powered wheelchairs to two local youngsters.

Watched by his family, sports-mad Mark Jones, 14, from Upton, Chester was the first to receive one of the chairs on the night, a gift which he hopes will give him greater independence to try his hand at new sports and activities.

The second chair was presented to Will Jenaid, 13, a student at Chestnut Lodge School, Widnes.

Will plays wheelchair football for Everton and attends an after school club run by Mark Eccleston, the Paralympian who won a silver medal at the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games, where he enjoys playing football and socialising with other youngsters.

Before the presentation, sports lovers tried their hand during a golf competition which was won by Alan Jarvis, Martin Mann, Phil Davies and entertainer Danny Roman.

And in the evening, entertainment was provided by the MEGA folks with a mix of song and comedy provided by Joe Wall, Ged Ryan (Dr Beat), Hal Nolan and Larry White.

The annual MEGA (Merseyside Entertainers Golf Association) charity day raised £1,000 towards the appeal, which has seen the golf club raise over £1m over two decades to give local children greater independence and freedom with the gift of a powered wheelchair.
