MICKLE Trafford-based wildlife-friendly farmer Huw Rowlands will be joined by Cheshire Wildlife Trust on Saturday (April 20) for a chance to enjoy spring down on the farm.

Huw’s farm sits within the Wildlife Trust’s ‘Living Landscape’, and the charity’s project officer Ben Gregory will be on hand to take visitors on a guided walk to explain what’s being done along the Gowy corridor and across Huw’s farm to benefit local wildlife.

Huw and the trust manage Cheshire-based livestock herds of Redpoll and Longhorn and will be offering a barbecue during the day, served up by the trust’s Wild About Conservation Meat.

There will also be chance for people to learn about how livestock are used as ‘living lawnmowers’ as part of local conservation projects to help manage meadows and grasslands for birds like lapwings and skylarks.

The River Gowy has been at the forefront of an innovative trial using willow ‘spilings’ (strands of young willow) to reinforce the riverbank, for the benefit of otters and water voles, while supplying natural willow cuttings later in the season to feed animals at Chester Zoo.
